CLASS DATE: Sunday, July 17, 1-5pm
LOCATION: Oil and Cotton Studio
INSTRUCTOR: Aaron Sanders Head
NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 8-15

In this workshop, Aaron Sanders Head will share multiple techniques for using homegrown or foraged flowers to create long lasting, beautiful colors on textiles. This workshop will focus on marigolds and cosmos, with some other seasonal favorites thrown in, with Aaron covering:

  1. Mordanting your fabric to achieve long-lasting colors

  2. Immersion dyeing for solid colors

  3. Bundle dyeing to create unique patterns on fabric

  4. pH shifts to expand your palette of color

  5. Flower pounding

Aaron will provide a yard of mordanted fabric for experimentation and all required dye materials. Participants should bring a pair of high-sleeved rubber gloves, several plastic bags for transporting wet fiber, and several small, natural fiber items for dyeing. Silk, Wool, Linen, Cotton and any natural fibers work beautifully, but no synthetics or blends as they will not take the dye as satisfyingly. Participants should wear an apron or dress in clothing that they don’t mind getting stained.
